Where to Buy English Wine

From vineyard cellar doors to Waitrose's seventy-strong English wine range — how to get the best English wine at the best price.

Best: Direct from the Vineyard

Every serious English wine producer runs an online shop that ships nationwide. Buying directly from the vineyard gives you the freshest stock, the cellar door price (usually the cheapest available), and access to library releases and limited editions that never appear in retail. Nyetimber, Gusbourne, Ridgeview, Rathfinny, Camel Valley, Hattingley Valley, Hambledon and Chapel Down all have excellent online shops. The disadvantage is that delivery costs can be high for single bottles — consider ordering a case.

Specialist English Wine Retailers

The English Vine is the UK's leading specialist English wine retailer, with a curated range from across England's best producers. The editorial standards are high; the selection is not comprehensive but is consistently reliable. An excellent first stop for gift buying.

Swig Wines is a specialist premium English wine merchant with strong producer relationships and an authoritative selection. The buying team knows what they're doing; if they stock it, it's good.

Berry Bros. & Rudd — now co-owner of Hambledon Vineyard — carries a premium range of English wines through its historic St James's Street shop and online. The provenance is impeccable; the prices reflect that.

Supermarkets

Waitrose is the most committed supermarket supporter of English wine, with over seventy English and Welsh wines available online through Waitrose Cellar. The range spans entry-level to premium, and the buying team is demonstrably knowledgeable.

Majestic Wine carries a growing English wine range across its 200+ stores and online, with competitive pricing and a return policy that encourages exploration.

Marks & Spencer, Ocado, and Sainsbury's all stock English wines, with Ocado's premium selection being the most reliable for top-tier producers including Nyetimber and Chapel Down.

Wine Clubs & Subscriptions

Naked Wines supports independent English winemakers through its Angel investor model and is increasingly including English producers in its range. If you already use Naked Wines, look for English wine additions in summer.

Laithwaites is the UK's largest mail-order wine business and stocks a decent English wine range. The mixed case options often include English wine as a discovery element — a useful way in for those new to the category.
